The Bar
Lux. 620 W 6th St, Austin, TX 78701
Visited 2/4/17 @ 6pm.
UPDATE: Lux has closed.
Green tea shot. Jameson, peach schnapps, sweet & sour. $5.
Yet more Jameson for me to drink. Their inescapable dominance of the bar whiskey scene had me curious, so I looked up some figures. As of 2016 Jameson accounted for a mere 4.34% of all whiskey sales, somehow less than whiskeys like Fireball, but given its recent growth perhaps it will be even more ubiquitous in a few years' time. It makes you think about the nature of progress, if good whiskey eventually drives out bad in a steady trend, or if it's just temporary churn and Jameson will inevitably lose its coolness to be replaced with something that fills the identical taste/quality niche at its price point.
I liked the shot.
Aaron.
This is not actually the same venue as Pop, which I had originally thought it was. They share an entrance, a similar interior lighting scheme - the same cool blue nighttime glow that makes everyone look like they're in a David Lynch production - and most likely the same clientele, but my credit card was charged to two different names, and that's good enough for me!
There was a LOT of room to stand around in this bar. Aside from the row of barstools and a bit of edge couch space, it felt like this was more of a standing/dancing space. I bet it gets absolutely packed at about 11pm. Can you really call it a "lounge" if there's nowhere to actually do any lounging? They do live music of both the band and DJ varieties, as well as special events.
